A FAMILY-run retirement home at Hanley Swan, near Malvern, is set to expand after winning planning permission to build new extensions.

The work will mean that Albion Lodge, which has been owned and managed by the Darwent family since 1985, will be able to add on several new bedrooms, enlarge the existing kitchen and add a new dining room.

And the family hopes to expand the home further and has acquired a neighbouring property, the Close, with the aim of further increasing its accommodation.

Mark Darwent, who is in charge of the planning applications, and whose brother Andrew now runs the home, said: “We are delighted to have received planning approval for the additional bedrooms and dining facilities. With government policy now focussed around care in the community we are also hopeful that a future planning application to build on the Close will be supported by Malvern Hills District Council. So far, the outline proposals have been well received by the parish council and I believe there is good support within the community for the development."

The home is already a significant employer in Hanley Swan, and Mr Darwent hopes the new development will not only create new jobs but will also provide close-care and assisted-living properties.

Mr Darwent said: "We are keen to provide accommodation for those residents able to lead a more independent lifestyle, whilst availing themselves of the facilities of the man care home and its services."
