THE first phase of works to update signalling equipment on the railway line that runs through Worcester, Malvern and Ledbury starts on Saturday, June 4.

The work is being carried out as part of Network Rail’s Railway Upgrade Plan, will involve refurbishing part of the existing signalling system; replacing tracks and carrying out essential maintenance work.

Although the work is intended to lead greater reliability for passengers, smoother journeys and fewer delays, it will be necessary for lines to be closed temporarily.

The first phase is closing the line between Worcester Shrub Hill and Droitwich Spa between Saturday, June 4, and Monday, June 13.

There will be replacement coach services between the two stations, and train will also run between Foregate Street and Droitwich, although the normal timetable will be amended.

And on the weekend of June 11 and 12, no trains will run between Ledbury and Hereford, with coach services linking the two stations.

Emily Luszcz of Network Rail said: “I’d like to thank passengers in advance for their patience and understanding while we complete essential work to upgrade the railway. This work forms an important part of our Railway Upgrade Plan, to provide greater reliability for passengers and improve their travelling experience.”

Brenda Lawrence of London Midland said: “We know there is never a good time to do improvement work across the network; however the works on the signalling system in the Worcester and Great Malvern areas this summer is essential and will allow our passengers to experience a reliable service in the area.

“We’ve worked closely with our industry partners and stakeholders to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum, and we strongly advise passengers to check their journeys before travelling.”

During this time, passengers are advised to check before they travel through train operators London Midland and Great Western Railway or National Rail Enquiries.

Further closures are planned later in June, in July and in August.
