LIZ Evans enjoyed her best round for several years when she carded 40 points to win the Jack Campbell Cup stableford at The Worcestershire.

With the greens a little more receptive than of late, Evans’ accuracy of approach, coupled with sound putting, brought her home two strokes in front and reduced her playing handicap to 12.

Following in the Silver Division was the in-form Jackie Marks on 38 with Jill Piner close behind on 37.

Jenny Nions had a good day, winning the Bronze Division on 38 points, three ahead of runner-up Brenda Jones and the third-placed Lisa Digings, who both had 35.

Jane Quick just edged out Brenda Lowe in the Copper Division, with both managing 35, and Jill Mico was third on 34.

In match-play, Evans employed every bit of her good form when she took on the challenge of playing tennis and squash ace Jane Poynder in the final of the Ledbury Plate.

However, the challenge of giving 14 strokes to the fast-improving golfer proved too great.

Poynder, who has only recently taken to golf, played faultlessly and to a standard well under her current handicap to take the title on the 14th hole.

Another impressive achievement was recorded when The Worcestershire ladies’ scratch league team of Lucy Walton, Ursula Pearson, Di Meakin, Chris Urry and Marks secured a 3½-1½ win at Stratford.

The result should ensure they remain in Scratch League Division Three.

Ladies’ captain Pam Emery-Reynolds took a group of 36 players to Cotswold Hills club for an enjoyable away day.

Blessed with wonderful weather, they played a yellow-ball three-ball alliance.

The winning team was Pat Rose, Jan Kirkland and Faith Tubb with 75 points. Second were Marks, Anne Garner and Pauline Savage with 72 on countback from Urry, Joan Herbert and Kay Bromley.

The longest drive was by Savage, while Marks and Di Wilde were nearest to the pin on two short holes.

A random team prize went to Jane Tromans, Jane Quick and Doreen Hunt.

Emery-Reynolds thanked all the members who took part and Sandra Schofield, Quick and vice-captain Mico, who helped to organise the day.

Meanwhile, the Worcestershire seniors’ section continued with their packed programme of competitions and matches. On home soil, a large turn-out of 54 members took part in the third of the tankard qualifying competitions.

The yellow-tee stableford saw three players return with 38 points.

Peter Taylor took the honours on count-back from runner-up Terry Cox and the third-placed Phil Berry.

A trip away to Broadway saw a close encounter.

Winning performances by Jim Wilde with Pete Basten and Dave Jones with Dave Wood, together with a half for Keith Hitchcock and Terry Cox, were not quite enough to tie the match, leaving Broadway 3½-2½ winners.
