THE opening day of the Birmingham and District Premier Cricket League campaign was severely disrupted by the dismal weather.

But the conditions did not stop Ombersley beating local rivals Kidderminster in the Premier Division.

Kidderminster finished on 170-9 from 42 overs with a half-century from former Worcestershire batsman Neil Pinner (53).

However, visitors Ombersley sailed past the total in the 30th over of their response after Liam Gwynne hit 11 boundaries in a run-a-ball 71.

In Division One, James Ayres (4-15) and Ali Ebad (3-28) combined to dismiss Brockhampton for 138 but the match between the two sides relegated from the top flight at the end of last season was abandoned with Dorridge on 21-1 from 5.5 overs.

It was a similar tale at Old Hill where Bromsgrove had reached 137-6 from 28.2 overs with Ash Newfield and Worcestershire's Alexei Kervezee both scoring 40.

At Malvern's Barnards Green, Smethwick reached 105-4 from 32 overs.

Stratford signalled their return to Division Two with a 21-run win at Old Elizabethans in a match completed without interruption.

Batting first, Stratford scored 211-8 from 50 overs with 51 from Rob West and an unbeaten 51 from debutant Perry Derrick, newly signed from Redditch.

Derrick then took 3-44 with the ball as the Worcester club were dismissed for 190 in 47.4 overs. Last season’s Worcestershire League champions Pershore began their Division Three season with a four-run DLS success after opening batsmen Liam Ridings (59) and Adam Wiffen (47) put on 103 for the first wicket against Streetly.

Their innings was curtailed prematurely by the weather after reaching 202-5 from 44 overs, which left the visitors with a revised target of 139 from 23 overs.

They fell just short on 134-8 after Neil Curtis (50) had given them a flying start.

Taylor Pugh took 3-26 to peg back Streetly, who lost their eighth wicket to the final ball of the game when they required one more boundary to win.

Fordhouses reached a revised target of 119-4 in 20 overs in reply to Astwood Bank’s 203 all out from 46.3 overs.

Steve Adshead hit the top score of the day with 96 for Bank.

Brewood were in a precarious position when their match against visitors Eastnor was abandoned with the home side on 78-8 from 28.1 overs.
