WORCESTERSHIRE cyclist Janet Birkmyre successfully defended four titles at the British Masters Track Championships.

The TORQ Performance rider from Great Witley won the 500-metre time trial in 37.616 seconds.

In Birkmyre’s specialist scratch race, the elite national champion from 2012 managed another dominant display to triumph.

On the final day of the championships for riders over 30 at Newport Velodrome, Wales, she won the two-kilometre pursuit in two minutes 34 seconds.

The time smashed the world masters best of 2.35.477 but records were not ratified at the championships.

Birkmyre must break it again in October at the world championships to be recognised.

She also won the points race by taking three of the four intermediate sprints to notch up 15 and win by five.

Birkmyre said: “I love riding the championships, it is one of my favourite meetings of the season because the racing is always fast and aggressive.

“Off the track, there is a chance to catch up with friends and the organiser Graham Bristow puts on an amazing event for us.

“I use these races to prepare for the big end-of-season goals, so I need to be winning here and my results this year are really encouraging.

“Much of the credit goes to my husband David, who works tirelessly for me behind the scenes.”

Her next race will be the elite national omnium series third round on Saturday at Welwyn, Hertfordshire.

Meanwhile, VC Sevale’s Jez Pile from Malvern claimed his first national title with gold in the 750m time trial in 51.563.

In the 3km pursuit, a personal best of 3.32.643 secured bronze.
