UPTON Colts made it six wins from six to start the 2023/24 season as they beat Telford Colts 32-13 on the road on Sunday.

It was a tight game until the final ten minutes but Upton finished the stronger of the two sides with a couple of late tries sealing a bonus-point win to keep their place at the top of the Division 4.

Upton opened the scoring after five minutes when Charlie Phillips did well to chase down a lovely chip across from Ollie Dobbin to dot down.

But the opening section of the game was tightly contested and Telford were the next to score mid-way through the half to level the scores at 5-5.

Ethan Palmer then popped up with an opportunist score for Upton, intercepting from the tail of a line out and racing to the try line from 40 meters out.  This made the score 10-5, which it remained until halftime.

It took 15 minutes of the second-half before the next try was scored and it was the visitors who extended their lead, Jacob Powles breaking through to cross.

But again Telford came back and they reduced the lead to just five points at 15-10, before both sides exchanged penalties to take the score to 18-13 heading into the final ten minutes of the match.

Then came the crucial moment. Some good kick chase pressure from Upton funnelled the Telford fullback towards the touchline, where a perfectly timed intercept from Lewis Farrell allowed him to race 60 meters to the tryline to score the bonus point for Upton.

The conversion from Lewis Jugessur put the scores out to 25-13 and now the game was all but won.

Tom Pryce-Jones added some gloss to the score line with a brilliant individual score and in the end the scoreboard looked a bit harsh on Telford, who had gone toe-to-toe with Upton for the majority of the game.

Their next league fixture is a home game vs Burntwood, Sunday November 26.
